Mid-way through a 21-day North American promotional tour for his upcoming movie
Battlefield Earth, John Travolta returned to
Montreal, Canada, where the sci-fi adventure film was shot last summer, for a book-signing
appearance at Chapters bookstore in downtown Montreal. The first fan arrived at 6:00 AM and by
the time the signing took place later on that afternoon, there were between 450 to 500
fans waiting in line for the actor, with another 500 to 600 people crammed into the
second and third floors of the bookstore and an overflow going down the
stairs, through the back of the store, around the front and into the street.
When Travolta first arrived,
cheering fans and flashing cameras continued for a full minute before the actor went into
the store. During the event, Travolta signed over 500 copies of the movie tie-in edition
of Battlefield Earth, the best-selling novel by L. Ron Hubbard on which
the film is based. A large contingent of Montreal media was on hand to film and photograph
the occasion. Several Battlefield
Earth cast and crew members were
also present to say hello to John, including Canadian actor Christian Tessier, who plays
Mickey, one of the band of oppressed humans who fight back against the alien invaders in
the film.

"Wow! I just got John Travoltas autograph!"
